David Teniers (der Jüngere)

Antwerpen 1610 - Antwerpen 1690

In 1610 David Teniers the Younger was born in Antwerp. David Teniers the Younger became an apprentice under his father, David Teniers the Elder, in Antwerp. In 1632-33 Teniers was admitted to the Sint Lucas Gilde. David Teniers the Younger was particularly famous for his depictions of rural environments. During his lifetime, Teniers moved in the highest circles of society and worked as a painter for the court and the aristocracy, which he longed to be part of himself. But that was the only thing he did not achieve during his life. He had a phenomenal career.
In 1637 he married Anna, the daughter of Jan van Brueghel the Elder, and thus gained access to the Flanders painting elite. Anna's guardian was another great of the time: Peter Paul Rubens.
As court painter in the service of the Spanish governor of the Southern Netherlands, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, David Teniers the Younger moved to Brussels in 1651. There, David Teniers took on the influential position of administrator of the Archduke's extensive collection. One of his pioneering achievements was the production of the first ever illustrated catalog of a collection of paintings, namely the Archduke's collection, entitled "Theatrum pictorium".
He also initiated the foundation of the Antwerp academy of fine art in 1664. In 1690 Teniers died in Brussels. David Teniers the Younger was one of the most important Flemish masters of the 17th century alongside Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Anthonis van Dyck (1599-1641) and Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678).
